Federal jobs are not restricted to the continental United States. U.S. government employees also work in Alaska, Hawaii, the U.S. territories, and in almost every foreign country.
Approximately, 36,000 Federal jobs overseas are filled by U.S. citizens. Roughly 70% of these are in Defense Department agencies, and another 25% are in the State Department, the International Communications Agency, and the International Development Cooperation Agency. Generally, the salary rates for these positions are equal to those of employees on the U.S. mainland; however, cost-of-living allowances of 5-25% apply in Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
