The National Cancer institute (NCI), National institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking an outstanding world class senior-level scientist to fill the position of Director, Division of Basic Sciences (DBS). The Director, DBS will provide national and international leadership to ensure scientific excellence of the biomedical research in DBS. The Director should enhance the position of the organization as a vanguard in the cancer research field into the 21st Century. The DBS is the largest of the three NCI Divisions which comprise the NCI Intramural Research Program and is the leader of a comprehensive effort to understand cancer through basic investigator-initiated research. The Director is responsible for creating and maintaining a innovative research environment that fosters collaboration between NCIs intramural research investigators and extramural scientists and continually stimulates novel research directed ultimately toward the treatment and prevention of cancer, AIDS and other related diseases. The Director, DBS is also responsible for establishing effective partnerships with academia and industry to assure that innovative technology is developed and is successfully transferred, enhanced, and commercialized. The Director determines immediate and long-range research objectives and directs the implementation of these objectives through the effective utilization of fiscal and other resources. Long-term planning includes expanded research efforts into the areas of developmental biology, and molecular cytogenetics as well as the maintenance of innovative, ongoing basic research. The Director ensures that DBS research reflects the highest standards of scientific excellence validated through rigorous peer review.
The DBS is organized into 36 Laboratories, Branches an Programs staffed with approximately 850 personnel positions, 750 Fellowship positions and 130 contract positions supported with an annual budget of approximately $150 million. Candidates should be internationally recognized for their scientific accomplishments, leadership and collaborative capabilities in the area of molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, immunology, biochemistry, and/or other areas of basic studies of cancer, AIDS and related diseases and the application of modern biotechnology to these studies. Candidates must also possess a medical and/or other doctoral-level degree in a biomedical or related field. In addition, candidates must be either a U.S. citizen , a citizen of a treaty-allied country, or a nonresident alien with a valid work visa. Total annual compensation will be commensurate with education and experience and ranges up to $151,800. Other appointment mechanisms and incentives may apply in individual circumstances based on experience and expertise to increase the salary range up to $200,000.
