Job Description And Qualifications Environmental Protection Specialists perform work that includes providing advice and assistance to state and local government Agencies relating to the development, implementation and maintenance of environmental protection plans. They also review plans developed by state Agencies to ensure that various provisions of Federal environmental standards are enacted; and they make recommendations for improvements when necessary. Candidates must be able to exercise discretion and judgement in the application of the knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of environmental planning and protection. For positions at the GS-5 to GS-7 level, candidates must possess a Bachelors degree in one of: environmental studies geography community planning public administration or have three years of general experience in administrative, professional or technical work in a related field.
GS-9 and Above Applicants at the GS-9 level must have a Masters degree in the fields identified in the paragraph above, or two years of specialized experience in program administration, development of environmental programs or community planning, in addition to three years of general experience. For positions at the GS-11 level and above, candidates must possess a Ph.D. in the fields shown above, or have at least three years of specialized experience.

Merit Promotion Current Federal Employees may use inservice lateral placement or merit promotion to obtain a position as an Environmental Protection Specialist. Those individuals currently employed as Environmental Protection Assistants, GS-09, may be able to apply their knowledge, skills and experience to Environmental Protection Specialist positions. In addition, other Federal occupations may provide the necessary backgrounds to become Environmental Protection Specialists. These include Ecologist, GS-408, Biologist, GS-401, Biology Technician, GS-404, Geographer, GS-150 and Community Planner, GS-20.
